Where to Stay in Cabarete: The Complete Neighborhoods Guide

Five years living here, and I still get asked this question daily. Here's the real breakdown of Cabarete's neighborhoods — where to stay based on what you actually want from your trip.

Aerial view of Cabarete showing different beach zones and neighborhoods

Cabarete isn't huge — you can walk the entire beach in 20 minutes. But those 20 minutes pass through totally different vibes. Party central, family-friendly resorts, millionaire mansions, and everything between.

The thing is, most people get this wrong. They book the first place they see on Booking.com without realizing they're putting themselves next to a nightclub when they wanted peace and quiet. Or they go too far out and spend half their vacation in taxi rides.

So here's the neighborhood breakdown nobody else will give you:

Cabarete Beach Center — The Action Zone

This is ground zero. The main beach stretch between Lax and Onno's Bar. If you want to be in the middle of everything — kite schools, beach bars, restaurants you can walk to — this is your spot.

Stay here if: You're here to kite, want walkable nightlife, like meeting people, don't mind some noise.

Skip if: You're a light sleeper, traveling with small kids, want a quiet romantic getaway.

The beach bars can get loud until midnight, especially on weekends. Music, voices, the occasional drunk person singing. It's Caribbean beach town energy — love it or hate it.

Best options here: Villa Taina (beachfront, been around forever), Casa Colonial Luxury Boutique Hotel (quieter side but still central), or short-term villa rentals if you're a group.

East of Center — The Sweet Spot

Walk 5 minutes east from the main action and you hit what I call the sweet spot. Close enough to walk to dinner, far enough to actually sleep at night. This is where most of the high-end villa rentals are.

The beach here is wider, less crowded, and the water's just as perfect. You get the occasional kite lesson or beach volleyball game, but it's way more chill than the center.

Stay here if: You want the best of both worlds — beach access plus peace and quiet. Perfect for couples, families, or groups who want space to spread out.

East Cabarete beachfront villas with private pools and beach access

This is where our villas are located, and honestly, it's my favorite part of Cabarete. You get private pools, actual kitchens, and enough space that your group won't drive each other crazy. Villa Azura and Villa Solara are both right on the beach here — you can literally walk out your door onto the sand.

Pro tip: The Millennium Resort is in this zone too. Their beach club is solid, and villa guests can sometimes use the facilities (ask nicely).

West End — Where the Money Lives

Past the main strip heading toward Encuentro Beach, you'll find the most expensive real estate in Cabarete. Oceanfront mansions, ultra-high-end vacation rentals, and some seriously impressive architecture.

It's quiet. Like, really quiet. The beach is gorgeous but you'll need to walk or drive to get to restaurants and nightlife. Think Malibu vibes — beautiful and exclusive, but isolated.

Stay here if: Money's no object, you want total privacy, you're planning to cook most meals at home, you don't mind being away from the action.

Skip if: You're on a budget, want to walk to dinner, like spontaneous beach bar stops, traveling solo.

The vacation rentals here can run $800-2000+ per night. You're paying for location, privacy, and usually some pretty incredible pools and outdoor spaces.

Encuentro Beach — Surfer Central

About 5 minutes drive west of main Cabarete, Encuentro is where the surfers hang out. Different vibe entirely — less polished, more authentic, way fewer tourists.

The waves are better for surfing, the restaurants are cheaper (think $8 fish plates instead of $18), and you'll hear more Spanish than English. I love it here, but it's not for everyone.

Stay here if: You surf, want to avoid tourist prices, like a more local experience, have a rental car.

Skip if: You don't surf, want easy access to Cabarete's nightlife, need walkable restaurants and shops.

Best options: Mostly smaller guesthouses and Airbnb rentals. Villa Isabella is solid if you want something nicer. Just remember — no nightlife within walking distance.

Town Center (Away from Beach) — Budget Option

Behind the main beach drag, there's an actual town where Dominicans live and work. You'll find the cheapest accommodations here — guesthouses for $30-50/night, local restaurants, internet cafes, the real Cabarete.

You're maybe a 3-4 minute walk to the beach, but you'll save serious money. And the local food scene back here is incredible if you know where to look.

Stay here if: You're backpacking, want authentic local experience, spending most time on the beach anyway, love Dominican food.

Skip if: You want beachfront views, luxury amenities, prefer familiar food options.

Hotels vs. Villa Rentals — The Real Talk

Here's what nobody tells you: hotels in Cabarete are hit or miss. The town grew up around kiteboarding and backpackers, not luxury travelers. Most hotels feel dated or overpriced for what you get.

Villa rentals are where it's at, especially for groups. You get your own pool, full kitchen, living space, and usually better beach access than hotels. Plus you can split the cost among several people.

For 4+ people, villas almost always work out cheaper than hotel rooms. For couples, it depends on your priorities. Want room service and daily housekeeping? Hotel. Want space, privacy, and a pool to yourselves? Villa.

Transportation Between Areas

Everything in central Cabarete is walkable. From the Millennium Resort to Lax Bar is maybe a 10-minute beach walk. Comfortable flip-flops territory.

To get to Encuentro or the far west end, you'll want wheels. Motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) are $1-2 per ride. Actual taxis are $8-15. Rental cars start around $40/day but parking can be tight in town.

Most villa rentals include airport transfers, which is huge. That's a $60-80 value and saves you the stress of figuring out transport after a long flight.

My Honest Recommendations

First time in Cabarete? Stay in the center or just east of center. You want easy access to everything while you figure out what you like.

Groups or families? Villa rental, east of center. Space to spread out, your own pool, kitchen for morning coffee and late-night snacks. Check out our group trip planning guide for more details.

Couples on a romantic getaway? West end villa or east of center. Avoid the party zone unless you're into that scene.

Solo travelers? Hotels in the center make more sense. Easier to meet people, walkable nightlife, no huge space you don't need.

Kiteboarding trip? As close to the beach center as possible. You'll want to roll out of bed and onto the water.

Surfers? Encuentro Beach. Don't even think about staying in main Cabarete — you'll spend half your trip driving to the waves.

Booking Tips (The Stuff Nobody Mentions)

Peak season (December-March) books up fast. I'm talking 3-6 months ahead for the good stuff. Don't wait.

Shoulder season (April-June, November) is the sweet spot. Better prices, fewer crowds, weather's still perfect. This is when locals take their vacations.

Hurricane season (July-October) gets a bad rap but actual storms are rare. It's hot and humid, afternoon rain is common, but you'll save 40% on everything. See our seasonal guide for the full breakdown.

Direct bookings often beat the booking sites. Most villa owners prefer direct contact — they save on commission and pass some savings to you. Plus you get better customer service when something goes wrong.
